Installing a Japan eSIM sounds technical, but it’s genuinely a five-minute job — and you do most of it at home before you fly. This guide walks you through it step by step, so you land in Japan already online. No jargon, just the taps that matter.
Before you buy: check your phone supports eSIM
Almost every phone from 2019 onward supports eSIM — recent iPhones (XS and newer), Google Pixel (3 and newer), and most flagship Samsung Galaxy models. Two quick checks:
- Your phone must be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or it’s paid off, it usually is.
- iPhone: Settings → General → About → look for a “Digital SIM” or EID entry. Android: search “eSIM” in Settings, or dial *#06# and look for an EID number.
No eSIM support? A physical SIM or a pocket WiFi rental is your alternative.
Step 1: Buy your eSIM (at home, on WiFi)

Step 2: Install the eSIM
Do this at home, connected to WiFi. Installing is not the same as activating — installing just adds the eSIM to your phone.
- iPhone: Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data) → Add eSIM → Use QR Code → scan the code (or tap the provider’s in-app install button).
- Android: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Add eSIM → scan the QR code.
Step 3: Label your lines
Your phone now has two lines: your home SIM and the new Japan eSIM. Give them clear labels (e.g., “Home” and “Japan”) so you don’t mix them up. Keep your home line on for calls and texts, and you’ll choose the eSIM for data in Japan.
Step 4: On arrival in Japan — turn it on
Most plans start counting from activation, so wait until you land. Then:
- Set your data line to the Japan eSIM (iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data → select the Japan line).
- Turn Data Roaming ON for the Japan eSIM line (this is normal for travel eSIMs and does not cause extra charges — the data is prepaid).
- Optionally turn off cellular data on your home line to avoid accidental roaming charges.
Within a minute or two you should see a signal and be online — often before you’ve left the airport.
Troubleshooting (the usual suspects)
No signal after activating? Toggle Airplane Mode on and off, or restart your phone. Confirm Data Roaming is ON for the eSIM line.
Connected but no internet? Check that your data line is set to the eSIM, not your home SIM. If the provider gave an APN setting, add it under the eSIM line’s cellular data settings.
Installed the QR code twice by mistake? Delete the duplicate eSIM and keep one. Note that a QR code can usually only be installed once, so don’t scan it on a second phone.

Will installing the eSIM start my plan early? No — installing only adds it to your phone. The plan typically starts when you activate/turn on data, so wait until you arrive.
Do I keep my home number? Yes. Your home SIM stays in for calls and texts while the eSIM handles data.
